Historical Development of the Department

The Provincial Revenue Department of Southern Province has been established under the Southern Provincial Financial Statue No. 07 of 1990.

The main purpose is to act as the pioneer in the revenue collection of the Southern Provincial Council within the boundaries imposed on the   subject of provincial revenue collection in terms of the 13th amendment to the constitution.

The collection of the turnover tax which was done by the Inland Revenue Department before the establishment of Provincial Council was brought under the Provincial Revenue Department after the establishment of Provincial Councils.

 The Provincial Revenue Department of Southern Province which was started in 1991 by recruiting and attaching the officer of the Inland Revenue Department has been expanded with the recruitment of required staff.

Taking into consideration the geographical expansion of the Southern Province, the Regional Office of the Provincial Revenue Department of Southern Province was established in Mathara in the year 1991 and in Hambanthota in the year 1997 . The head office was established in Galle and the department is functioning under the Revenue Commissioner of the Southern Province.

The collection of turnover tax as 82 million in 1991 and it was able to increased up to 581 million in 2006. The revenue target for the year 2009 was 1375 million and it was able to collect 1401 million. The 1445 million of target turnover tax exceeded as 1641 in 2010. Accordingly it will be able to exceed the total amount of revenue collection of 2000 million.

Action is taken in coordination with the land registrar offices at Galle, Balapitiya, Mathara, Tangalle and Hambanthota to examine the payment of stamp fee on the deeds prepared in connection with the transfers of immovable properties in the province and to recover the correct stamp fee.
